Why Settle Mats?

Settle Mats are more than a soft place for your pets to lie down on - it is a cue.

Over time, your dog learns that their settle mat = their safe space for downtime.

Builds "Settle" Habit: Bring the settle mat out, and your dog knows it is time to wind down. Great for puppies learning impulse control, or adult dogs who struggle to "switch off".

Safe Space Anywhere: Bring the same portable mat with your dog for Boarding and Daycare, when travelling and staying at new places, for patio season - the same familiar mat and scent can help your dog settle into a new place comfortably.

Decompression on-the-go

Perfect for Outings: Patio season, cafés and brunches, picnic outings, road trips,
instead of pacing around unsure off where to settle, your dog knows the mat is their safe space.

Decompression for Reactive or Anxious Dogs: A familiar mat gives your dog something predictable and familiar to come back to, especially in new environments with distractions.

Supports Crate-free Training: Settle-train on a settle mat can support crate-free training for dogs who do not like being confined or for environments without a crate available.

How to Introduce Settle Mats

Introducing something new to your dog is a process, and going slow makes all the difference.

It is important to go at your dog's pace to ensure they are comfortable in the long term when you bring the portable mat outdoors. We want the mat to become a place they choose, not a place they are forced to stay on.

Here is our Training Guide below for reference!

Settle Mat Training Guide

Introduction

Lay the mat down at home and let your dog explore it on their own. Use a clicker to mark any interaction - a sniff, a paw on the mat, even looking at it - and reward instantly. Keep sessions short!

Early Progress

Success at this stage is simple: your dog choosing to step onto the mat or staying on it for a few seconds. Mark and reward every interaction, no matter how small. The mat = good things happen.

Add a Cue

Once your dog is reliably going on the mat, pair it with a consistent cue "settle" or "place". Say the cue just as they step on, then click and reward when they land. Consistency is key here!

Settle Sessions

Start with short stays of a few seconds and slowly build duration between rewards. Feeding meals on the mat is a great way to reinforce it as their calm and safe spot.

Quiet Outdoors

Once your dog knows the cue indoors, repeat the same process somewhere quiet outside - your balcony or backyard. Ensure low distractions + short sessions to start.

Out & About

When settle is solid, slowly introduce distractions - a calm corner of a park, then a cafe. If your dog struggles, go back a step. Build confidence before complexity.

Reward Consistently

Using high-value training treats alongside your clicker can make all the difference when teaching settle, especially in the early stages.

Quick and rewarding feedback helps your dog build positive associations with the mat faster, stay engaged through each session, and gain confidence as you progress from quiet rooms to busier environments.

Not Food Motivated?

For toy-driven dogs, a calm enrichment reward can work just as well. Try an interactive toy, stuffed kong, or chew delivered on the mat — this reinforces settle as a calm, rewarding place to be, rather than a high-energy "play" cue.

Mealtimes on the Settle Mat

Feeding meals on the settle mat is a great way to teach your dog it is a safe and fun place to be, but timing matters.

Wait until the basics are in: If you feed on the mat before the settle cue is solid, your dog will only associate it with food.

Once the basics are in, it's a game changer, especially for patio season and future Boarding. Drop a chew or lick mat down, cue "settle," and your dog will be occupied!

Settle Mat, but make it cooling

If your dog overheats easily, the Fury Cooling Settle Mat is designed with an extra detachable cooling layer, so body heat doesn't get trapped between your dog and the mat.

For the Floofs: Double-coated breeds overheat fast! The cooling layer gives them somewhere comfy and cooling.

Made for Summers: Designed to hold up through hot days, patio seasons, road trips.

Longer Settles: When the mat stays cool, there is less shuffling! That means better naps, calmer meals, and more relaxed travel.
