How to Introduce Dog Boots

Introducing boots to your dog is a process, and going slow makes all the difference.

It is important to go at your dog's pace to ensure they are comfortable walking in them in the long term.

Here is our Training and Desensitization Guide below for reference!

Dog Boots Training Guide

Introduction

Start by letting your dog sniff the boots and reward any curiosity. From there, begin with one boot at a time and keep sessions short and positive.

Early Progress

Success in the beginning might simply look like your dog allowing you to touch their paw with the boot or place the boot halfway on, and that counts!

Front Paws In

Once they are comfortable, move to front paws only before gradually adding the back paws. Use high value treats to build positive associations.

Walk Indoors

Once all 4 boots are on, practice walking indoors first. Encourage movement with rewards, then slowly introduce light play (treat tosses) to help them move naturally.

Outdoor Time!

When your dog is fully comfortable indoors, it's time to transition to outdoor use! They might still walk a little funny, they just need time to adjust their coordination.

It Takes Time

Go at your dog's pace and have fun with the process! If they resist, pause and try again another day. We want them to be comfy & confident walking in their stylish boots!

Reward Consistently

Using high value training treats can make all the difference when training our dogs, especially when we are teaching them something new like wearing boots.

Quick and rewarding feedback helps our dogs build positive associations faster, stay engaged, and gain confidence through each step of the learning process.

Not Food Motivated?

For toy-driven dogs, enrichment toys and play-based rewards can be just effective. Use their favourite toy for a quick game of tug or short fetch to build positive associations and keep training engaging!
